This former student and his story is what every college faculty and academic advisor loves about their work. I’ve worked in higher education for my entire career and my favorite students are gems like YongJung Kim. What an joy it was to have him as one of my students to help him achieve his dreams. He made a point to stop by and say hello after receiving his work authorization and I could not be happier to see him receive his lottery news. It’s been a long journey but I know he has an incredible UMD network of students and faculty that are cheering for him. Congratulations YongJung! You are a true inspiration and a great friend to so many classmates. We’re all very happy for your great news!

Mr. Glasgow!! Thank you very much for your kind words. Since I came to the U.S, one of the great luck for me was to meet you, the best advisor. Because of your help, I was able to enter UMD and meet so many great professors and wonderful friends, and under your guidance, I was able to get the degree and job I wanted. I am sure I would never have come this far without your help. I was happy to be your student, and I will forever be your student. I truly appreciate everything you have done for me!! Go, Terp!!

UMD’s Smith School of Business Accounting program offers students exceptional opportunities for internships with lots of area accounting firms including the Big4 and Carina has taken full advantage of these opportunities by securing multiple internships, a TA teaching assistant position and she’s going to earn up to 1/3 of the 30 graduate school credits towards a MS business degree, all while completing her bachelor’s degree in Accounting, the language of business. As a result, Carina will graduate in May 2025 with a BS degree in Accounting and have knocked off 10 of the 30 graduate school credits for her Smith School Masters degree, and all those graduate school credits are included with her undergraduate tuition bill! The Plus1 program allows talented UMD students like Carina, who know they want to earn a graduate degree and have found their desired path…to save money by participating in the Plus1 program and spend one additional year to complete a graduate business degree. Accounting majors find this opportunity too good to pass up as they are able to use their extra credits towards their CPA license requirements. Congrats on your success and we in the Accounting department and Smith School of Business love seeing outstanding students like you making the most of your time in the Smith School. Keep it going! We look forward to following your career and hearing from you post graduation. Kudos!

I read this greatarticleinMaryland Matterstoday highlighting the fact that Montgomery College is the first HSI college in our state, (aHispanic Serving Institution), a U.S. Department of Education designation, with a Latino full-time enrollment of at least 25%. The article profiles one of its students,JuryMedrano Jimenez, who just completedher two year Associate's degree in business lastmonth. Jury is an incoming transfer student who will be transferring to UMD in late August to enroll in the Smith School of Business as a marketing major but she will NOT be taking her business courses in College Park. Instead, Ms. Jimenez will spend the next two years enrolled in UMD business classes at theUniversities of Shady Grove, in Rockville, MD where over 2000 students have attended since 2001 and earned aSmith School of Businessdegree from UMD at Shady Grove. Students commute to this state of the art in-county campus which offers over 80 degree programs from 9 different UMS institutions.Juryhas decided to save the expenses ofroom and board on the UMD campus or nearby apartments and to commute locally to the USG campus so she can graduate with little to no debt, which is a high priority for her and her family. The USG campus is one of the best kept secrets for students enrolled at Montgomery, Frederick, and Howard community colleges. Students can commute to the USG campus and earn the same degree as students who move into a dorm or student apartment on the main campus and save about half the cost for completing the final two years of their bachelors degree and conveniently take courses in Rockville, with lots of area businesses with internship opportunities.Jurywill join a large cohort of about 200 business students at USG as they enroll in a cohesive program with students completinga business degree in accounting, marketing or business management, taking the same courses with UMD Smith School of Business faculty as the students on the main CollegePark campus,Juryis also enrolled in theSouthern Management Leadership Programwhich will add a minor to her marketing major and the SMLP minor focuses on entrepreneurship. We in the Smith School of Business at Shady Grove look forward to havingJurybring her talents and continueto grow and expand her business knowledge and expand her leadership roles in our student-led clubs and as an ambassadorto the Latino student population at MC and the UMD and USG community.#SmithSchoolofBusiness hashtag#Accounting hashtag#Management hashtag#Marketing hashtag#UMD hashtag#GoTerps hashtag#ShadyGrove hashtag#UniversitiesatShadyGrove hashtag#MontgomeryCollege hashtag#Gratitude hashtag#ClassOf2024 hashtag#NewBeginnings hashtag#Graduation hashtag#SouthernManagementLeadershipProgram

Congratulations Elliot! It’s something to see how much you have accomplished over the years since you graduated from UMD Smith School of Business as the outstanding student in your graduating class with your accounting degree. Your classmates and faculty have fond memories of your success inside and outside of class. I’ve marveled how you have shared your passion and knowledge of basic finance in your Northbrook’s Common Sense newsletter and shared your expertise with students of all ages and your financial literacy talks which explains to young students the power of saving, investing, and how steady and regular savings with compounding interest over a lifetime can bring huge benefits later in life. Teaching children the basics of finance and the importance of saving while young can really make a big difference. Keep up the excellent work with your investment in the future savers of the next generation. You’ve definitely developed a great reputation as an accountant who gives so much back. Paying it forward is your mantra, Elliot! Kudos to you for all your efforts in education the public on financial literacy, especially the younger generation. It’s time for UMD 2024 Commencement! I have to give a special shoutout to a former student, who graduates tomorrow with his second Smith School degree. It’s also a joy seeing one of our shining stars Taylor Gerrety, who is pictured with favorite Accounting professor Jeff Milton. Taylor served as a DSAC member at Shady Grove and is graduating with the accounting class of 2024. These pictures were taken at the annual UMD 2024 Smith School Accounting department awards banquet last week. Congratulations to Mike Ugwuoyne, Class of 2023 accounting graduate at at Shady Grove. Mike is graduating tomorrow with his Masters degree in Accounting with the Smith School of Business. Congratulations to Mike who’s pictured here with our inspirational Dean Prabhudev Konana. It’s gratifying to see a growing number of former students like Mike who return to UMD and earn their masters degree with the Smith School of Business. Several students have participated in the Plus1 program which enabled them to complete up to 10 of the 30 credits for their masters degree while simultaneously completing their bachelor’s degree…paying only undergraduate tuition and saving up to 1/3 of the cost of their masters degree. Hank Boyd and I have truly enjoyed working together at the Shady Grove campus to celebrate with our students who earn their business degree at Shady Grove. Konana. We congratulate our Class of 2024!Go Terps!#SmithSchoolofBusiness #Accounting #Management #Marketing #UMD #GoTerps #ShadyGrove #UniversitiesatShadyGrove #MontgomeryCollege #Gratitude #ClassOf2024 #NewBeginnings #Graduation

I have a few more students in our accounting program who attended the annual UMD 2024 Smith School Accounting department awards banquet with both undergraduate and masters students. I’m delighted to share a few pictures of our undergraduate Accounting students at Shady Grove. What exciting times for our graduating seniors, almost all who have upcoming summer jobs and/or internships with several accounting firms, many who helped sponsor this wonderful year end banquet. What a handsome group of students make up the Smith School program at Shady Grove. Congratulations to Arjun Kariyakarawanage, Phoo Khin, Zhenlan Qian, Jessica Abebe Auza. Several of our students with our incredibly supportive Dean Konana. And William Morton, who was introduced by Assistant Dean for Civic Engagement, Prof. Hank Boyd. Wiiiam is the third Smith School graduate in his family, following his two older sisters in earning his Accounting degree with Smith School at Shady Grove. Go Terps!#SmithSchoolofBusiness #Accounting #Management #Marketing #UMD #GoTerps #ShadyGrove #UniversitiesatShadyGrove #MontgomeryCollege #Gratitude #ClassOf2024 #NewBeginnings #Graduation
