Ticer Dora Hanco*ck Melvin Dean 'Yadro' Filkins FERG ES Abraham W. "A.W." "Abe" Grounds, 82, of Ferges went home to be with the Lord at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, in Herrin Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Grounds He was born on July 8, 1922, in Herrin, to Clarence and Lillian (Bristow) Grounds, and was the sixth of 13 children. He moved to Ferges as a small child. He married Louise Scoby on Jan. 10, 1946, and she survives. Abe was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1938-1940 and served his country in the U.S.

Navy from 1940-1946. Fifty-two months of that time was on active duty in South Pacific during, World War II. He attained the rank of gunner's mate, first class. Abe was employed by Freeman Coal Freeburn, Orients 4, 5, and 6 for 31 years, retiring in 1976. He faithfully attended, loved and supported Ferges Free Methodist Church his entire life.

He was a member of the American Legion in Herrin and the Disabled American Veterans. He loved gardening and asked the Lord to bless each seed he planted. However, the true joy he received came from giving away the fruits of his labor. Survivors include his devoted wife of 59 years, Louise Grounds of Ferges; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sue Grounds of Charleston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and James K. Ritter of Ferges and Linda and Jim Cargal of Johnston City; four granddaughters, Jennifer and husband Rich Pribble of Herrin, Erin and husband Larry James Long of Johnston City, Joy Ritter of Ferges, and Holly Cargal of Johnston City; four grandsons, Dan Grounds of Romeoville, Jarrod and wife Cindy Ritter of Marion, Jeremy and wife Wendi Ritter of Goreville, and Adam and wife Misty Cargal of Johnston City; three greatgranddaughters, Alyssa Erin and Madison Mae Pribble of Herrin and Haley Elizabeth Ritter of Marion; one greatgrandson, Cameron James Long of Johnston City; her step-grandchildren, Christie Hardin of Lincoln and Teresa Milligan and Amy and husband Ryan Anis, all of Mattoon; her step-greatgrandchildren, Cameron, Jordan and Nate Anis and Madison Milligan, all of Mattoon; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Juda Grounds of Marion and Larry and Marilyn Grounds of Herrin; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Pauline Frick and Audrey Haynes, both of Marion, Dorthella and Luther Youngblood of Herrin, and Mary and Joe co*ckburn of Johnston City; three sisters-inlaw, Lillian Grounds of Marion, Evelyn Grounds of Herrin, and Mary Helen Grounds of West Frankfort; one brother-in-law, Albert Oliver of Pensacola, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elroy, Richard and Ernest Grounds; and three sisters, Maude and husband Frank Oglesby, Arietta and husband Arlie Hubbard, and Betty Oliver; one brother-in-law, Clarence Frick; one grandson, Jeffrey Grounds; and three nieces. Abe was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved his Lord, his family, his church and his country. Our loss is Heaven's gain. Services will be at 11 a.m.

Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, in the Ferges Free Methodist Church, with the Rev. Don Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in Herrin military City. Cemetery, with rites conducted by the Herrin American Legion and VFW posts.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at JohnsonHughes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ferges Free Methodist Church. Andrew's Catholic Church in Christopher, with Father Steven Poole officiating. Interment will be in St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.

Mrs. Kaminski was a retired clerk for Arondelli's and in a doctor's office. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church. She was born on March 6, 1929, in Royalton, to Jacob and Ann (Byer) Spyket.

She married Anthony Kaminski in St. Louis, and he survives. Other survivors include one brother, Leo Spyket of St. Louis; and one sister, Helen Starasta of Royalton. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Herman, Adolph, John and Fred Spyket, and one sister, Mildred Alkaski.

Wilma Louise Kuerth MOUNT VERNON Wilma Louis Kuerth, 84, of Centralia, formerly of Mount Vernon, died at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Centralia Manor. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov.

15, 2004, in Old Union Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, with the Rev. Brad Henson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia is in charge of arrangements. was a homemaker. She formerly worked at the Mount Vernon Garment Factory and Carps Department Store. She was a member of the Old Union Missionary Baptist Church and Jefferson County Homemakers. She was born on Dec.

29, 1919, in Franklin County, to Dan E. and Grace (Campbell) Dale. She married A.J. "Bill" Kuerth on Sept. 1, 1952, in Clay County, and he preceded her in death on May 22, 1977.

She lived her last five years in Centralia, but prior to that was a longtime Mount Vernon resident. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Janice Kuerth of Mount Vernon; two daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara and Herbert Dare of Mount Vernon and Donna Setzekorn of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Byford Dale; and one sister, Jewel Garrison. Memorials may be made to Old Union Missionary Baptist Church. 10, 2004, in Bellevue. She was born on Aug. 24, 1959, in Tiptonville, the daughter of Gary and Ruth Norris Collier. She married Shane Christopher Dillow on March 18, 1994, in Tacoma, Wash. She is survived by her husband, Shane Christopher Dillow of Bellevue; three sons, Joseph Brandon, Christopher Edward and Austin Colt; her parents of Cypress; one sister, Kim Dillow of Lick Creek; one brother, Gary Wayne Collier Jr.

of Anna; her maternal grandmother, Thelma Norris of Cypress; her father- and mother-in-law, Darrell and Sandy Dillow of Cobden; and her nieces, nephew, and other relatives and friends. She married Lester James on April 11, 1940, in Jackson, Mo. He preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1958. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Mark Floretta of Florissant; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Micah, John and Matthew Floretta, all of Florissant; two sisters, Isabell Wiggs of Florissant and Helen Colp of Crainville; and one brother, Leon Cannon of Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Mae retired in 1988 from the Nutrition Headquarters in Carbondale, where she worked in the bottling department. She was also a homemaker who took great pride in the appearance of her home and yard. She was a member of the Carterville First United Methodist Church. Willie Otto 'Bill' Kessel CHESTER Willie Otto "Bill" Kessel, 93, died at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday, Nov.

10, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Mike Fogerson officiating.

Burial will be in Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Kessel was a retired guard from Menard Correctional Center in Chester. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Ava. He was born on March 30, 1911, in Ava, to Charles H. and Ada Ripply Kessel.

He married Electa Worthen on April 6, 1935, in Ava. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1997. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Kenneth and the Rev. Karol Kessel of Aromas, Dean and Ruth Kessel of Dongola; and Dwayne and Linda Kessel of Chester; six grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, three brothers and three sisters. Paul Sachtleben HOYLETON Paul Sachtelben, 96, died at 4:31 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. Services will be at 2 p.m.

Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton, with the Rev. Mark Nebel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Styninger Funeral Chapel in Hoyleton.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church and will be received by the funeral home. MURPHYSBORO Benjamin H. Ticer, 81, of a.m. Murphysboro, Thursday, died Nov. at 11, 11,29, in St.

Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Ben was born in Murphysboro on Sept. 21, 1923, the son of the late Benjamin H. and Elsie (Smith) Ticer. He was a general farm laborer.

Ben married Sharlet L. Beasley on Sept. 9, 1942, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 1, 2003. Services will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, in Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Crawshaw Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro.

Genevieve, John Edward and Georgia Ticer of Murphysboro, and Henry Andrew Ticer of Carbondale; one brother, William Robert Ticer of Carbondale; one sister, Vinnie Taylor of Sand Ridge; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, one sister, one stepbrother and one stepsister. McCauley, 84, of Coulterville, died at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Noral was born on Aug. 15, 1920, in Tilden, a son to Hugh Earl and Leona (Frieman) McCauley.

He married Gladys A. Ernest on Dec. 31, 1943, in Perryville, a and she preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 2000. He was the owner of Coulterville Equipment Company and a member of the Grandcote Reformed Presbyterian Church, the Lion's Club of Coulterville, Masonic Order Hope Lodge No.

162 of Sparta, the VFW of Coulterville, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Belleville, the Ainad Temple of East St. Louis and the Eastern Star No. 411 of Sparta. He was also actively involved in the Bethel Cemetery Association of Swanwick, a former member of the Coulterville Fire Department and a member of the Randolph County Shrine Club. He was also a veteran of the U.S.

Army during World War II. He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Ordith and Polly McCauley of Edinberg, Texas; one sister, Betty Ervin of Sparta; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one nephew, Michael McCauley. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov.

ZEIGLER Melvin Dean "Yadro" Filkins, 59, died at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at home. He was born on Dec. 12, 1944, in West Frankfort, to Joe and Mary Maxine (Summers) Filkins.

He married Doris Giles on Nov. 21, 1981, in Sesser. She survives. Other survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Chris and Sandy Filkins of Royalton and Kevin of Royalton. He is also survived by two daughters and a son-inlaw, Tim and Melanie Meadows of Zeigler and Jennifer Filkins of Royalton; two grandchildren, Timothy Meadows and Kristan Filkins; two brothers and a sister-inlaw, Joe and Bonnie Filkins, and Donald Filkins of West Frankfort; his mother, Mary Maxine Filkins of West Frankfort; his four little buddies, Casey Jo, Buster, Nugs and MoMo; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Filkins was a retired coal miner, last working at Rend Lake Mine and member of Local Union No. 1545. He was a member of the Zeigler First Baptist Church and the Lodge in West Frankfort.

He was an Army Veteran. He was an avid NASCAR fan and a big Cubs fan. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at the First Baptist Church in Zeigler, with the Rev.

Clinton Woodfin officiating. Friends may call at the church after 9 a.m. Saturday. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the First Baptist Church in Zeigler. Envelopes will be available at the church.
